Classic Hot Cocoa

Creamy Homemade Hot Chocolate. A combination of cocoa powder and chocolate chips make this hot chocolate extra flavorful and SO easy to make!

I spend majority of my December evenings curled up, with my hands wrapped around this warm cup of Hot Cocoa. I love it topped with an excessive amount of marshmallows or some coconut oil based whipped cream – bonus points if you add cacao flakes on top!

It is so incredible easy to make homemade Hot Chocolate. Put down the powdery packet! Throw a handful of real ingredient in a pot and get creative – something else that I love about making Hot Chocolate is how versatile it is! Add in flavors you and your family love. You can rarely ever go wrong here.

This recipe is made with a combination of cocoa powder and chocolate chips. The cocoa powder adds the distinct “hot cocoa” flavor, and the chocolate chips make this drink cream and rich! A splash of vanilla extract brings it all together!

Homemade Classic Hot Chocolate

  • 4 cups almond milk I used Trader Joe’s unsweetened
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup Hu Kitchen chocolate gems or any chocolate morsels you have on hand
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • marshmallows for topping


  1. throw all ingredients in a small pot over medium heat and use a hand-held frother mix until full combined and frother

  2. Transfer to mug and top with marshmallows!
